What Do Wild Rabbits Look Like?

Wild rabbits are usually brown or grey in colour, as their fur is designed to blend into the natural environment. They have long, narrow faces with almond-shaped eyes and long, thin ears. Wild rabbits will usually avoid humans and other animals, because they are prey animals, whereas domestic rabbits are often friendly, and come in a wide range of different colours.

What Happens If I Notice A Domestic Rabbit In The Wild?

Domestic rabbits sometimes escape or are set free by their owners when they don’t want them, but they are unlikely to survive in the wild, and can easily get killed by predators such as foxes, or hit by cars. As such, if you see a clearly domestic rabbit in the wild, it’s important you catch it as soon as possible. You can then take it to a local animal rescue, who will try and find its original owner or find it a new home.

Are Wild Rabbits Protected By Law?

While there is no law specifically protecting wild rabbits in the UK, they are covered under the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996. The act ensures that wild rabbits caught in the UK have to be killed in a humane way or released, and cannot be caused unnecessary harm. LPPC Environmental offers humane rabbit control services to manage rabbit populations and stop them from causing issues.

There are several ways to control wild rabbits, including installing rabbit proof fencing, using ferrets, catching rabbits in cage traps and other humane methods. LPPC Environmental can employ all these solutions, and we’ve got extensive experience in rabbit control throughout Aberdeen and beyond.
